Our client a well-funded high potential start up medical device company are currently seeking an R&D Director to join their team
Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer and be a strategic partner and advisor in terms of technology, innovation, intellectual property, know-how, organisational technical core competency, R&D strategy, product commercialization, program execution and on all matters related to the technical operations of the business as well as being a key member of the management team
The R&D Director will Develop strategic objectives for the R&D function that are aligned with the business strategy and execute on approved strategic objectives. Work closely with strategic marketing and commercial functions to define the needs being addressed in each R&D program and deliver the concepts, capabilities, designs, and plans to meet these needs.
The successful candidate will have responsibility for leading cross-functional project teams through the product development cycle from concept to design, validation and regulatory approval through to delivery of a fully developed product, ready for market. Ensure that R&D projects are delivered on time, in budget and that the products meet the specifications agreed at the outset. Responsible to ensure that the R&D team is structured and organised for long term success
•Central role in the development of new products to ensure that the products will (a)create real value for physicians and patients, (b) add substantially to the brand value of the company, (c) represent a significant financial opportunity for the business and, (d) reflect the brand values that the company aspires to.
•Developing and promoting a culture of innovation and a philosophy of being the knowledge leaders in the field of the business. Directing the innovation and knowledge capabilities of the company towards creating technological value for the business.
•Directing and overseeing all aspects of the R&D function for the enterprise.Defining technological roadmap of the company and assuming the overall leadership of the development of the company’s product portfolio.
•Defining product development milestones and drive the cross functional team towards those milestones. Co-lead (with strategic marketing) the definition, documentation and approval of the needs and customer requirements being addressed in each R&D program.
•Maintain effective communication channels between the R&D team and members of the
management team, cross functional team and with employees operating in the field.
•HR management and reporting responsibility for R&D staff.

•Play a leadership role in the pre-Commercial development activities of the Group and
support successful commercial product launches.
•Foresee and manage technological risks in the business and promote the disciplines of
risk management, project management and project execution in the Group.
•Analysing and projecting to the leadership team the work plan resources and budget
required to implement the milestones.
•Champion the innovation processes, invention disclosure processes and IP filing processes, and in partnership with the CTO, the innovation processes of the company.
•Support the CTO in the prosecution of the IP portfolio, the IP strategy and building
a powerful IP position for the company in its field.
•Support the CTO and commercial teams in the execution of the businesses clinical and commercial programs.
•Oversee the project management processes of the company and ensure that programs are executed in a manner that ensures multifunctional team representation and appropriate involvement of and communication with senior management.
•Maintain effective communication channels with members of the management team, with team members and with employees operating in the field.
•Direct and manage the R&D resources of the business including the R&D team and
•Working with the CTO ensure the efficient deployment of capital on R&D programs.
•Define and prioritise selection criteria for new manufacturing partners, oversee the process for assessing new partners and be the primary point of contact with key manufacturing partners and manage relationships with these key partners.
•While working closely with CTO, Finance and QA; lead the negotiation of contracts with key manufacturing partners.
•Ensure that high quality product is delivered, supply chain runs smoothly and
efficiently, that pricing is competitive, that supplier power is managed, and that the knowhow and intellectual property of the company is protected and that all intellectual property paid for by the company vests in the company.
•Develop and evolve a vision for an outsourced manufacturing operation for the group and exercise good judgment in balancing:
(i)Outstanding product technical performance.
(ii)High quality and reliable products.
(iii)Dependable supply chain that allows uninterrupted development of the business.
(iv)Robust inventory management strategies.
(v)Low cost of goods.
(vi)Retention of all know how and IP associated with the product.
•Carry leadership responsibility for the development and management of the brand of the company
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Polymer, Chemical or Industrial Engineering. Masters or PhD in a related field is highly desirable, or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience
•At least 15 years of experience in the medical device industry with at least 5
years management and leadership experience in technology roles.
•A deep understanding of the Medical Device industry and Electro-mechanical technologies generally. Preferably with experience in RF applications, Neuromodulation or a related field.
•A track record of bringing new products through development and commercialization.
•Demonstrated leadership and management experience in working with cross-functional, geographically dispersed teams on complex projects.
•Innovative leader who blends strategy, planning and analytics to produce outstanding business results
•Understands team dynamics and experienced at building teams that deliver results.
•Requires excellent written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
•Ability to effectively present information to top management peers, in public fora, and to a board of directors
•Prior experience working for a MedTech company whose products and processes are FDA regulated.
•Highly focused on delivering products that meet the needs of patients and customers.
•Experience in the development of medical devices that require complex processes and assembly techniques and a proven ability to deliver results in this setting
