Distribution Manager

Our client is a leading organisation in the sourcing & distribution of chemicals across a range of Industry Sectors (Food, Beverage, Pharma, Cosmetics, Neutraceuticals, Veterinary, Biopharma, Distilling & Brewing, Coatings, Animal Nutrition, Consutruction & Building Chemicals, Water Treatment). They are currently seeking a Distribution Manager to manage and oversee all warehouse operations within a chemical distribution environment, ensuring safe storage, regulatory compliance, inventory accuracy, and efficient dispatch of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.

This role involves strategic planning and management of logistics, warehousing, transportation, and stock levels to meet company objectives. The position serves as a key point of contact between company departments, and customers.

Monitor inventory levels, conduct regular cycle counts, and ensure accurate stock records to prevent stockouts or overstocking. Implement inventory management techniques such as FIFO (First In, First Out) and batch tracking to optimize stock levels based on demand.

Lead and manage warehouse staff, including training, and performance evaluation. Provide direction and support to ensure productivity and adherence to operational standards and regulatory compliance.

Oversee the receipt, storage, and dispatch of goods. Ensure that shipping and receiving processes are efficient and timely, optimizing warehouse layout and workflow to maximize space utilization.

Analyse warehouse performance data to identify areas for improvement. Implement best practices and technology solutions to enhance operational efficiency and streamline processes.

Manage the warehouse manager and work closely with procurement, sales, and transport companies to optimize the flow of goods and resolve any logistical issues that may arise.

Responsible to:Managing Director/ Authorised deputy

Role/ Responsibilities:

  • Plan and manage distribution operations to ensure timely and accurate deliveries.
  • Oversee warehouse activities including storage, inventory control, and dispatch.
  • Monitor transportation schedules and coordinate with carriers.
  • Optimize distribution routes to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Negotiate out-going freight / warehouse rates.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements. Support the company quality function.
  • Manage and supervise staff, including training, and performance evaluation.
  • Control distribution budgets and monitor operational expenses.
  • Implement systems to track shipments, inventory levels, and delivery performance.
  • Resolve customer delivery issues and maintain service quality standards.
  • Prepare and present distribution performance reports to senior management.
  • Liaise with company account managers, quality department and supply chain manager.
Compliance:
  • Ensuring that valid haulier licenses are in place and GDP driver checks are performed.
  • Ensure compliance with local and international regulations relating to chemical storage and transport (e.g. ADR, IMDG, CLP/GHS as applicable).
Stock:
  • Oversee physical stock checks on a quarterly basis in house and in external warehouse facilities. Report on and investigate any discrepancies.
  • Identify and report on expired/ due to expire stock. Highlight corrective actions and communicate to relevant stakeholders.
  • Review and report on inventory stock levels. Liaise with purchasing and account managers.
General Maintenance
  • Managing building maintenance to include hiring of contractors.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of forklifts and handling equipment.
  • Maintain warehouse cleanliness and housekeeping standards.
  • Liaising with tenants and dealing with minor repairs when needed.
  • Upkeep of yard and car park facilities.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, train, and supervise warehouse staff. Must have good communication skills.
  • Conduct performance management and development reviews.
  • Promote a strong safety culture.

Education/ Qualifications:

Essential:
  • Degree or diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role. Have a good understanding warehouse management.
  • Experience handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of dangerous goods regulations (ADR/IATA/IMDG).
  • Good understanding of HSE requirements in chemical storage.
